Jatra

Jatra

Jatra Movie Review

"Jatra", a marathi movie released in 2006 is a comedy of errors. The movie directed by Kedar Shinde stars a lot of actors and I mean a lot of actors. The movie is about how age old tradition and false ego affects the life of people of two villages.

The story primarily is of two village called Hyalagaad and Tyaalagaad. Roughly translated the name of the two villages is bury him/ bury them. The story is of a Jatra or religious fair is about a fair, the hosting of which leads to rivalry between the two villages. The host of the fair is decided by a race between two individual from the village, who run and even kill for winning the hosting rights.

A youth called Monya played by Bharat Jadhav who wants to become rich along with his six friends by hook or crook arrives in this villages along with his friend. At the same time, his look alike who has a limited vocalbary also lands in the same village. What follows is a great comedy of error, funny one liners and mindless comedy.

Jatra feels like the stupid comedies which Priyadarshan is master of. The story is a mishmash and made of totally impossible situations. The only thing that saves the film is a tight script and the comic timing of the actors. The negative aspect of the movie is there are too many actors in the movie. Kedar Shinde’s earlier film, “Aga Bai Arechya” was a good balanced film. Jatra is an out and out comedies where the director does not give you enough time to think. He jumps from one situation to another with little or no connection to the first one. But the good thing is that there is never a boring moment although you do understand that it is stupid.

Consider this! The situation that leads to Monya coming from the city to the village is totally unbelievable. The way the mix-up occur is again without logic. But then Jatra is a slapstick comedy and it does not claim to be logical in its reasoning.

Bharat Jadav is the hero of the movie and plays a double role. The success of a double role depends on the actor giving each role a different personality. The story and script of a double role movie always ensures that they both have different personalities. It could be the way they talk, behave or any other thing.

Deven Varma and Sanjeev Kumar in Angoor are the only double roles I remember where both the roles have almost the same mannerism and still both the characters seem quite apart.

Man Pakharu Pakharu

Man Pakharu Pakharu

Man Pakharu Pakharu Movie Review

We have seen many great movies based upon medical profession like 'Anand', 'Munnabhai MBBS' or even 'Shwaas' in Marathi. Despite the same base, every movie carried different aspect of medical profession and human relations. 'Man Pakharu Pakharu' is belongs to the same tradition, which discovers a beautiful relation between a doctor and a patient while dealing with problems of people facing neurological disorder.

The story starts at hospital, where Dr. Neelay Raje (Subodh Bhave) joins as new doctor. He is a sensitive guy, unlike other doctors his emotions are not died yet. He wants to discover his own path and wants to treat patients from his heart instead of brain. He finds his inspiration from Dr. Pandit (Prashant Damle) in same hospital. While treating the patients facing neurological disorder, he interacted with a young patient- Sarang (Sachin Pilagavkar). Sarang is like an alive dead body. He has lost all his senses. Neelay finds out extraordinary willpower of Sarang and gives all the efforts to bring him back in this world. Further story develops through amazing relations, emotions and dialogs between Sarang and Neelay. Different aspects of relations of a doctor and a patient, a mother and a son, doctor and hospital owner or even between two patients have been covered brilliantly in the movie. The story provides quiet lot information about neurological disorder without breaking flow of story. Though it is a very static subject, Iravati Karnik- story and screen play writer has taken enough care to make it interesting. It is extremely good and successful attempt of Iravati- a new generation author to write such an informative but still entertaining story. All the time she had kept in mind that it's a commercial movie, not a documentary and audiences admire her efforts a lot.

Movie has got really good star cast. 'Subodh Bhave', 'Sachin Pilgavkar', 'Mohan Joshi', 'Prashant Damle', 'Ila Bhate' and 'Girija'. Names are enough to state the high class acting and it would be better experience to watch them on screen, instead of reading about their high-quality acting over here. Sachin has spent more than 4 decades in the industry but day by day his acting is getting more and more younger. He himself is a school of acting and we have seen many great renowned actors inspired by him. All the feature of his role has been presented incredibly by Sachin. It is a challenge for any actor to perform a mentally handicapped patient, yet Sachin has presented it magnificently. He hardly cries in the movie, but his facial expressions, body language and dialog delivery literally make the audiences cry. A patient of neurological disorder, a young man, a good son and beyond all, an enthusiastic and kind hearted human being, all these aspect of Sarang's character has charmingly shown by Sachin. He had actually got into the skins of Neelay. He had lived the character and I have no doubt in my mind that it is going to be milestone character in Marathi Film Industry. Subodh Bhave sounds good in role of Neelay. All the characteristics of Neelay like a shy doctor, emotional human being and helpless friend in the case of Sarang has played nicely by him. Prashant Damle, Ila Bhate and Mohan Joshi are as usual acted well. Girija hasn't got much scope to show her skills.

Aamhi Satpute

Aamhi Satpute

Aamhi Satpute Movie Review

Success has become a habit with him. Sachin Pilgaonkar has never gone wrong with his directorial ventures starting with Mai Baap in 1982 to his last release Navra Mazha Navsacha in 2004 which was a big hit . Now the maker is ready with the Marathi version of the 1954-film Seven Brides For Seven Brothers. Aamhi Satpute he says is just an inspiration of that film and is heavily flavoured with the native touch.

"After Navra Mazha Navsacha, Ashutosh Gowarikar came up with the idea of a film on the lines of Seven Brides … to be made in Marathi. He suggested that I give it a thought and said if I was not too keen he would make it after the completion of Jodhaa Akbar,” says Sachin who after pondering over the idea for some days decided to make it himself since he was a part of its Hindi version Satte Pe Satta in 1982. “I played Sunny, the youngest of the seven brothers in that film. It is one of my favourite films,” he smiled. Aamhi Satpute, he says, is just his interpretation of the original film. It took him two years to work on the script as he got busy with the Kannada film Ekadanta starring Vishnuvardhan, Ramesh Aravind and Prema in between. He had to work on script of Aamhi Satpute as it required a rustic feel to it as he is making it for the Marathi audience and going by the present taste of the viewers, he has incorporated a lot of technology including the latest, helicam.

Elaborating on how different Aamhi Satpute would be from Satte Pe Satta, Sachin states that he is not touching on the characters of Amjad Khan or Ranjeeta. “My storytelling is very different though there are traces of familiarity.” While Amitabh Bachchan played Ravi, the older brother and Sachin the youngest of all, in Aamhi Satpute, Sachin plays the older brother and Swapnil Joshi is the last of the lot. While in Satte Pe Satta, all the guys were named after weekdays, in Aamhi Satpute, since they are vegetable vendors, the names are Kandya (as in onion), Batatya (potato), Tambya, Kobiya (cabbage), Harbarya (black gram), Todkya (a green vegetable) and Chinklya (core of the onion). They are known as the bhaaji paltan.

Sachin informs that there are some very unique aspects concerning the film. “One of the USPs is that Aamhi Satpute was completed in 45 days which is very rare these days. Secondly a helicam, that is vastly used for advertisements and very rarely for films, has been used for the first time for a Marathi film. It has been mostly used for the introductory song of the seven brothers as well as some chase scenes. This has added to the quality of my project. Thirdly all the six songs are very different from each other, unlike the films of today. Fourthly, there is one song in the film sung by Sonu Niigam but in the voices of Kumar Sanu, Nitin Mukesh, Shabbir Kumar, Adnan Sami as well as in his own voice.”
